The main guide to sustainable forest management in its operations is the PNG Forestry Laws and Regulations embodied in the PNG Logging Code of Practice (PNGLCOP), including other PNG Government Laws. Additionally, the company strives to become a model for the forest industry in PNG by practicing sustainable forest management. This is a full proof of the company’s commitment to balancing environmental, social, and economic issues while doing its business.
The OBT has identified HCV areas within the project area in collaboration with local and international experts.
Tree plantations are at risk from pests and diseases that affect trees. If any pests or illnesses spread, tree plantations can be quickly destroyed. Integrated pest management with primary reliance on prevention and biological control methods rather than chemical pesticides and fungicides is considered. Consultation and collaboration with local experts and government agencies are crucial for technical advice.
Fire is the plantation's worst enemy and must be anticipated. OBT develops a proper strategic action plan, observes and maintains different control measures and strategies to prevent fire, prepares appropriate equipment, and assigns responsible persons involved in suppressing the fire. Training is provided to the fire control team in collaboration with experts to ensure the fire management plan is properly implemented. Forest protection awareness is extended not only to workers but also to the surrounding communities in the area who are residing inside the plantation.
The OBT uses its best endeavour to overcome and minimize the deleterious effects caused by its operations on the physical environment and the local communities of the Project Land. Comply with all environmental control conditions and continue to implement the Waste Management Program (3R Principle - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to overcome and minimize deleterious and detrimental effects of waste in the physical environment and the well-being of people living within OBT’s premises and its surrounding.
OBT restores areas that have been harmed by purely natural events as well as during its operation by replanting native species. To reach the planting goal, unproductive plantation areas are rehabilitated by planting the same species.
Soil and water monitoring, is conducted within the operation areas to check the impact of the company’s operations on the soil in terms of compactness and on the water quality, especially after harvesting operations within the plantation forests.
